About us

FRIENDS OF FENLEY FIELD

Our Cause

We need to raise considerable funds to undertake a much-needed modernisation of our sporting, recreation and community facilities at Fenley Field. Our objective is to develop a safe, accessible, modern but sustainable facility, open to all, that can meet the needs of our ever-growing numbers.

The History

In 1899 The Old Laurentian Society was formed with the aims of encouraging the performance of pupils and encouraging sporting activities for ex pupils of Lawrence Sheriff School known as “Old Boys”.

In 1919 the Old Laurentian Rugby Football Club was formed and from 1922 they played their Rugby at Hart Field in Lower Hillmorton Road.

In 1939, under the guidance of Lol Fenley the society purchased its own base in Bilton. The ground was immediately ploughed up to support the war effort! After the war the field became playing surfaces and a series of club houses evolved. In recognition of Lol Fenley’s hard work the facility was named Fenley Field.

In the 1960s the Old Laurentian Rugby Football Club became a club open to all and since the turn of the Century has developed a thriving Mini & Junior section, a ladies contact and touch teams plus Walking Rugby for those aged 50 and above.

Today & Tomorrow

Today Fenley Field is now home to a wide breadth of sporting, recreational and community activities. From Rugby Football, Hockey, Cricket, Dog Training to the Sprogs & Logs toddler group. Fenley Field is home to the Old Laurentian Rugby Football Club (OLRFC), Rugby and East Warwickshire Hockey Club (REWHC) and  Old Laurentian Cricket Club. The combined numbers  involved at Fenley Field is in the region of 1200 persons. Activities are open to all regardless, with a current participant age range in actual sporting activity from 18 months through to 75 years plus.

Whilst participation of activities at Fenley Field has moved with the times our home has not. The Club House is a strange mix of 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s building. It is a generational evolution that has become dated and is rapidly being outgrown by our numbers and their needs.

To continue to provide a Club House facility that is relevant today and tomorrow we desperately need to undergo an extensive modernisation project. We need to ensure that our facility provides all age appropriate safe guarding, is accessible to all visitors, is safe, meets the requirements of the various club’s controlling bodies and associations, efficient to run and maintain. Ultimately we want to create a friendly environment for a wide range of clubs and activities in the community to mix and call home.

The Fenley Field Development Team are a group of unpaid volunteers with relevant experience who have been asked to coordinate this modernisation project. We are looking to call upon the skills and capabilities within the clubs and local community to help us with the project but ultimately we will also need to engage in considerable fund raising!

Please help support our local cause through participation in Rugby Lotto and selecting “Friends of Fenley Field” as your chosen cause.

Many thanks!
